FAQs
We know that investing in pool heating can be a big decision, that’s why we have put together a list of our most frequently asked questions.
Why should I heat my swimming pool?
Adding a swimming pool to your home can add value and improve your lifestyle. However, the number one factor determining how often you use the pool is water temperature. Pool water that’s too cold (usually below 26°C) is not comfortable to swim in. Adding an appropriately sized Thermal Solar Pool Heating system will increase the pools temperature by at least 10°C above ambient, providing a comfortable swimming temperature.
To ensure your investment doesn’t go unused, some form of heating is highly recommended. With exceptionally low running costs and excellent heating efficiency, Thermal Solar Pool Heating is an ideal choice.
What pool heating options are available?
In Australia there are 3 main forms of pool heating – Thermal Solar Pool Heating, Gas Heating and Heat Pumps.
THERMAL SOLAR POOL HEATING
Using the sun’s free energy, Thermal Solar Pool Heating works by pumping pool water through a series of tubes (known as the solar collector) which is mounted to a suitable roof near the pool. The black solar collectors absorb the heat from the sun and transfer it to the pool water circuiting inside them, before being returned to the pool. Thermal Solar Pool Heating is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat your pool and has been used for over 40 years.
GAS HEATING
Gas Pool Heating works by burning either natural gas or propane to heat the pool water. It offers fast and on-demand heating, regardless of the weather. However, due to the high running costs, gas heating is most suitable for intermittent use. Gas heating can also be combined with a more cost-effective heater – such as Thermal Solar Pool Heating.
HEAT PUMPS
Heat Pumps use electricity to draw heat from the ambient air temperature and transfer it to your pool water. They employ the sample heating/cooling principles as your air conditioner and refrigerator. Heat Pumps can be sized to provide you with a few more swimming months either side of summer or they can be sized up to provide year-round heating.

How does Thermal Solar Pool Heating work?
Thermal Solar Pool Heating is a very simple process. Pool water is pumped through a series of tubes (known as the solar collector) which is mounted to a roof near the pool. The black solar collectors absorb the heat from the sun and transfer it to the pool water circuiting inside them, before being returned to the pool.
You can set the desired pool temperature via the automatic digital controller, which will monitor both the roof and pool temperature, and switch the pump on and off to achieve the set point.

How much does Thermal Solar cost to install?
On average, a Thermal Solar Pool Heating costs between $3,500 and $5,000 to install, including a digital controller and dedicated solar pump. The final price will depend on many factors including the supplier, the type of system, the pools size, its positioning, available plumbing configurations, and the height and pitch of the roof. These values are based on an average sized swimming pool in Australia of approximately 32m².
How much does Thermal Solar cost to operate?
Basic Thermal Solar Pool Heating set-ups can operate using your existing pool filtration, meaning the system is completely free to operate.
However, more sophisticated systems operate using an additional energy efficient solar pump (this depends on the available plumbing configurations). The cost of running this small pump is approximately $200 per year. This cost is attributed to:
- Running a 500-watt pump
- For 6 hours a day
- Over 6 months of the year
- On a $0.28 per kw/hr tariff
Thermal Solar Pool Heating is the most cost-effective way to heat your pool and has a payback period can be as little as two years (compared to gas or electric heaters).

How do pool Heat Pumps work?
Heat Pumps use electricity to heat your pool, and employ the sample principles as your refrigerator or air conditioner. Basically, a refrigerant gas is moved through a series of aluminum finned tubes called an evaporator. A large fan draws heat from the ambient air and transfers it to the evaporator. The refrigerant is then compressed, significantly increasing its temperature. It then moves through a heat exchanger. At the same time the pool water is pumped through the heat exchanger where a heat transfer between the refrigerant and pool water takes place.
Therefore, Heat Pumps offer the advantage of being able to operate at low temperatures (provided they are sized appropriately). Just keep in mind that they will be significantly less efficient when there is less ambient heat in the air.
How does Gas Heating Work?
Gas Pool Heating works by burning either natural gas or propane within a combustion chamber. This chamber heats the heat exchanger, which is comprised of a bundle of copper finned tubes. Pool water is pumped from the filter and through these heated copper tubes. Heat is transferred to the circulating pool water before returning to the pool or spa.
Gas heaters have an onboard thermostat and control allowing the user to set their desired water temperature.

Do I need a Pool Blanket / Cover?
Pool Blankets / Covers are not mandatory in Victoria. However, while not required, Pool Blankets offer significant advantages, such as reducing heat loss while minimising evaporation, chemicals, dirt, and debris.
We highly recommend adding a Pool Blanket / Cover if you plan on using gas or electricity, as you will significantly save on running costs.
